What is Woodworking?

Simple put, woodworking is the art or process of shaping wood into a desired and useful form. Even though a woodworker can be significantly different in skill set than a carpenter or a joiner, they will each use many of the same tools in their craft. A Woodworker will use carpentry skills to build items like cabinets and furniture. They will also specialize in furniture repair.

Carpentry is the process of using wood to build structural forms. For example, in the form of residential or commercial buildings. A Carpenter will cut and join timber to build the structure, usually at an onsite location. A Joiner is a tradesperson who specializes is what is defined as panel and frame construction and will mostly, if not always, be working in a shop. Joiners will build the timber products that will finish the structure built elsewhere. A good analogy of the three could be that the Carpenter builds the house, the Joiner builds the doors and window frames, and the Woodworker fills the house with cabinetry and beautiful wood furnishing, like tables and chairs, just to name a few.

At Victoria Woodworkers, members of our team are skilled in specialized areas. This gives us the ability to service any niche in the Victoria region. We’re proud of our team, our customer service and the level of fine woodworking we can provide you now or on your next project.

Types of Woodworking We Provide

Carvers – our skilled artisans can take any design or even customize a design for our clients and then bring that to life. This can include decorative or functional pieces. These tradespeople can also be referred to as “turners”, who are adept with working on the lathe. They produce all sorts of turned items such as bowls and dishes. We are not limited by the size of any project.

Framers – even though this could also fall under the category of carpentry, this also is a cross-over skill for a woodworker. This would include the construction of the roof, floors, and/or walls of a given structure.

Furniture Makers – as with any of our services, we can either build based on your specs or we can provide custom work that you bring to us. Our cabinet makers are skilled and highly experienced, able to produce a variety of useful items. This can include tables, chairs, desks, cabinets and even rocking chairs. These skilled artisans are also experienced in furniture refinishing. This includes stripping of old paint or stain and reapplying new life to the surfaces.

Another area of expertise is in the area of furniture repair. Surprisingly, this is a busy niche which is high in demand. Most of this work is caused from moving companies damaging their client’s wood / timber furniture. It happens much more than one would expect.

So, if you’ve ever wondered if there are "cabinet makers near me” or maybe even someone who does “furniture repairing near me”, then look no further. We’d love to work with you.

Types of Carpentry We Provide

Our team of Carpenters are a great mix of personality, knowledge and skillset. They have individually and collectively honed their skills by specializing in two or three areas of the trade. This is a great asset our team brings when it comes to working on some of our larger projects. The depth of talent ensures success.

Types of Carpenter include:

Framing Carpenter: They will specialize in the framing of building construction. Essentially putting the “bones” of the structure to be in place. Everything else will be built around this work. This is a cross-over role with woodworking specialists.

Rough Carpenter: There’s a bit of overlap here with the Framer. This tradesperson will do framing, formwork (temporary wood moulds), structural builds, and roofing work as well.

Joister: This role in the construction process specializes in the laying of floor joists, in preparation for a floor surface to be attached.

Cabinet Maker: This role is a cross-over with a specialized woodworker. In a residential project this person will be the cabinet builder, and would also handle built ins, such as walk-in closets, bookshelves, and the like.

Trim Carpenter: This team member specializes in ornamental type carpentry, working with trims and mouldings, mantles and skirting boards for example.

We also have a team of experienced in-house Joiners and Finishing Carpenters who focus sole on the fine woodworking that a standard carpenter would not do. As mentioned above, similar to the Trim Carpenter, these team members handle the more ornamental, lighter work on specific projects. These types of carpenters will work in a shop with tools and non-portable machinery.

What Types of Timber do we use?

Timber refers to the wood of the tree after it has been felled. We are able to access local and non-regional raw materials based on the project, purpose and design.

With woodworkers building cabinets, tables and desks for example, mahogany and oak are both highly desirable. Hard woods, having more density than that of a soft wood timber, take great skill too carve and a favorite tool would be the wood planer.

With framing and building construction, soft wood product is used. So here we will use, again depending on the project, Spruce, Fir or Pine timber products. The soft wood is lighter and when processed doesn’t undergo much transformation of structure.

Where do we work?

We’re lucky to live in the Greater Victoria region. Being located in Victoria gives us the opportunity to be able to provide our services to a broad area. We can be pretty much at any jobsite from the Saanich Peninsula all the way up to Sooke.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does a woodworker do?

A woodworker is a skilled craftsman who works with various types of wood to create items such as cabinets, furniture, and pretty much anything else made of wood or materials synthetic in nature.

  • What is the difference between a woodworker and a carpenter?

A woodworker could certainly be referred to as a carpenter, and vice versa. However, although both work with all sorts of wood, and do have very similar responsibilities, the main difference is a carpenter will usually be working on site on a project, while a woodworker will be working in a shop environment on different types of projects. They can be looked at in the same way we look at metal fabricators and welders.

  • How much does it cost to hire a woodworker?

Rates will vary based on skillset, quality of work, materials employed, scope of project, and a few other minor factors. A ballpark rate will be somewhere in the range of $40 – 100 per hour. The more skilled the woodworker, will usually dictate a higher hourly rate than a junior craftsman. Best advise is to really review what it is you want the final outcome to be for whatever project. If quality is very high on the requirement scale, then don’t go cheap. You get what you pay for.

  • How much does it cost to repair a wood table?

An experienced woodworker will have the proper space and tools to repair or refinish an average-sized tabletop in a very short period of time… if the damage is not severe. The process includes stripping the old finish off, filling and sanding any flaws, cracks, and uneven surfaces, staining, and curing. It can all happen within 2 – 3 hours.

  • Is it true that vinegar can remove deep scratches in my wood furniture?

It’s not an old wives’ tale. This actually does work. The formulation is simple; take 1 part distilled white vinegar, and mix it with 2 parts oil (any cooking oil will do). Rub the mixture over the scratches until they disappear. Wipe any excess with a paper towel.

  • How much does it cost to build a custom chair for my dining room?

That is a tricky question because of so many factors such as design, designer, cost of the type of wood employed, location of where it’s being built vs being shipped to, and others. For a reasonable set of chairs, the range is quite broad. Some styles fall around $100 per chair, upwards to $1000 per chair. Then you get into the major designer market, where the prices are astronomical.
